pretty portraits

ive always been a huge fan of portraits done in any medium, and last night i was introduced to the almost hypnotic paintings of Alison Blickle.  the show was at a small but well curated space put together by the cutest couple ever which is definitely worth venturing over to - Thierry Goldberg Gallery.

the use of the layering in the painting is so amazing.  and the colors. me oh my!

lil miss ranty pants.

yesterday i read an entire book. it was the opposite of good, but on page 252 it had one redeeming quote:

When I ask him why he left LA, he tells me that it was the loneliest place on earth. "Especially when you're hanging out with people", he says. "Everybody smiles at your jokes."
He loves New York, he says. "It's like Oberlin - it's where people who don't belong anywhere belong."

actually that quote isnt even all that good. grammatically its confusing. but the mention of la being lonely woke up my heart a little bit. its true, that city is so empty. and new york is definitely where i belong. but as far as the other 273 pages there really isnt much worth mentioning. the sad thing is that it came from book that was on the best sellers list for quite a while, and partially made into a film that is also not worth mentioning. my roomate found it in the entryway to our apt. building. and for some reason i decided to read it cover to cover. it was kind of like watching the lifetime channel for an afternoon. p.s. that is not a compliment.

why dont people read anymore? and how do so many books end up doing so well when there is little to no content in them. it makes me sad that when people do decide to read they end up picking books like the current favorite useless text to film, hes just not that into you. come on america read. its fun. actually its better than tv you jerks.

in other boring news, the academy awards were a snoresfest.  is it me or does it seem like award shows are turning into a mockery of themselves.  hugh jackman? singing and dancing with beyonce.  come on.  thats not incredible academic cinema thats just annoying.
i was happy to see that sean penn won for his portrayal of harvey milk.  i found that film to be incredibly beautiful.  there were so many amazing shots of the city, and i was surprised by most of the casts performances.  being from the sf bay area mr. milks story was very familiar to me. the city really never forgot about what an important political and social figure he was.

surprising to me though is that while walking out of the movie in chelsea (aka fancy gayville) no one actually knew it was a true story.  how can you be an educated gay man in a metropolitan city and have no idea who harvey milk is until sean penn plays him in a movie?
did anyone even recognize that the film was about the political importance of his actions, and the fact he and the mayor of san francisco were murdered by someone who was later let off.
attention america this film was not made so you could see straight men make out with each other.  although james franco is always quite delectable.
ok done ranting. xx

oh the imagery...

the freeing of the daisies.

..."Now he had to deal with remembering to bring his sunglasses everywhere and to water the plants his girlfriend had unceremoniously abandoned when she left him. Or was it that she left the plants when she abandoned him? He could not decide who was more helpless, him or the vegetation. He considered this. Definitely there was a sadness about the Gerber daisies residing in a pot on the front step only a few feet from the actual earth."
an excerpt by the lovely Rhea Noel Hindemits short story found on her blog.

bonita!

oh those pleats on that hat brim, well done.

cat on the lap

if that mark twain were about 30 years younger and 100 years more alive i think id be in love.

bow tie, mustache, perfect.

yep folks these are his cats.

apparently he loves kittens and orphans.

seersucker suit, even more perfect.

further evidence of just how cool he was, or mind you - is.
