building my winter coat

most people look for work when they are between jobs.  me? nah.  ive started trying new recipes atleast once a week for fun, and the fact im obsessed with food.

made a vegetarian jambalaya that was pretty delicious.  didnt get the chance to take a after pic because we ate all of it. yumm.  but dont those veggies look pretty?  found the recipe on "Emeril'.  funny right?  definitely add more cayenne.

Ingredients
6 cups vegetable stock, recipe follows
1/4 cup olive oil
1 cup finely chopped onions
1/2 cup finely chopped yellow bell pepper
1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 cups whole grain farro (or spelt), picked over for impurities and rinsed
2 cups diced tomatoes
2 cups quartered cremini mushrooms
1/4 pound okra, halved lengthwise
1/4 pound whole baby carrots, tops removed and scrubbed
1 small zucchini, sliced into 1/2-inch thick half circles
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves
Directions
In a medium saucepan, bring the vegetable stock to a simmer. Lower the heat to keep warm.

In a medium pot, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions, peppers, and celery and cook until soft, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the garlic and farro to the pan and cook, stirring, until the faro is toasted and coated with oil, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the tomatoes, mushrooms, okra, baby carrots, zucchini, bay leaf, and thyme, and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Add 2 cups of the warm stock, salt, black pepper, and cayenne, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring, until the liquid is absorbed. Continue adding the stock, 2 cups at a time, as the previous addition is absorbed, cooking and stirring, until all the stock is used and the grains are plump and tender.

Remove from the heat and discard the bay leaf. Stir in the parsley and adjust the seasoning,to taste. Serve immediately.

these fleur de sel caramels were ridiculous.  i didnt even know i liked them until now.  found on "Epicurious'.out of this world.

1 cup heavy cream
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 teaspoon fleur de sel*
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water

Special equipment: parchment paper; a deep-fat thermometer

preparation

Line bottom and sides of an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, then lightly oil parchment.

Bring cream, butter, and fleur de sel to a boil in a small saucepan, then remove from heat and set aside.

Boil sugar, corn syrup, and water in a 3- to 4-quart heavy saucepan, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Boil, without stirring but gently swirling pan, until mixture is a light golden caramel.

Carefully stir in cream mixture (mixture will bubble up) and simmer, stirring frequently, until caramel registers 248°F on thermometer, 10 to 15 minutes. Pour into baking pan and cool 2 hours. Cut into 1-inch pieces, then wrap each piece in a 4-inch square of wax paper, twisting 2 ends to close.

central park safari

you know when you stumble upon something and it just seems way too good to be true. well i just did.
"wildman" steve brill hosts tours of the different parks here in new york.  there is a particular tour of central park coming up on march 14th that involves him showing you what you can eat that grows naturally throughout the 843 acres.  and he does all this wearing that amazing safari hat, wire rimmed glasses, and a smile.

the tours are donation only, and you are encouraged to bring plastic, cloth, and paper bags to gather your foragings.  seriously.  i mean come on. its like my dream. new york rules.
you have to watch the video, it really seals the deal.  he conducts this tour with a sense of humor that is part educational, and part cuckoo - i think im in love.
hes definitely on the list of people who make a dinner party.  move over benjamin franklin.

ive always been a huge fan of portraits done in any medium, and last night i was introduced to the almost hypnotic paintings of Alison Blickle.  the show was at a small but well curated space put together by the cutest couple ever which is definitely worth venturing over to - Thierry Goldberg Gallery.

the use of the layering in the painting is so amazing.  and the colors. me oh my!

lil miss ranty pants.

yesterday i read an entire book. it was the opposite of good, but on page 252 it had one redeeming quote:

When I ask him why he left LA, he tells me that it was the loneliest place on earth. "Especially when you're hanging out with people", he says. "Everybody smiles at your jokes."
He loves New York, he says. "It's like Oberlin - it's where people who don't belong anywhere belong."

actually that quote isnt even all that good. grammatically its confusing. but the mention of la being lonely woke up my heart a little bit. its true, that city is so empty. and new york is definitely where i belong. but as far as the other 273 pages there really isnt much worth mentioning. the sad thing is that it came from book that was on the best sellers list for quite a while, and partially made into a film that is also not worth mentioning. my roomate found it in the entryway to our apt. building. and for some reason i decided to read it cover to cover. it was kind of like watching the lifetime channel for an afternoon. p.s. that is not a compliment.

why dont people read anymore? and how do so many books end up doing so well when there is little to no content in them. it makes me sad that when people do decide to read they end up picking books like the current favorite useless text to film, hes just not that into you. come on america read. its fun. actually its better than tv you jerks.

in other boring news, the academy awards were a snoresfest.  is it me or does it seem like award shows are turning into a mockery of themselves.  hugh jackman? singing and dancing with beyonce.  come on.  thats not incredible academic cinema thats just annoying.
i was happy to see that sean penn won for his portrayal of harvey milk.  i found that film to be incredibly beautiful.  there were so many amazing shots of the city, and i was surprised by most of the casts performances.  being from the sf bay area mr. milks story was very familiar to me. the city really never forgot about what an important political and social figure he was.

surprising to me though is that while walking out of the movie in chelsea (aka fancy gayville) no one actually knew it was a true story.  how can you be an educated gay man in a metropolitan city and have no idea who harvey milk is until sean penn plays him in a movie?
did anyone even recognize that the film was about the political importance of his actions, and the fact he and the mayor of san francisco were murdered by someone who was later let off.
attention america this film was not made so you could see straight men make out with each other.  although james franco is always quite delectable.
ok done ranting. xx

oh the imagery...

the freeing of the daisies.

..."Now he had to deal with remembering to bring his sunglasses everywhere and to water the plants his girlfriend had unceremoniously abandoned when she left him. Or was it that she left the plants when she abandoned him? He could not decide who was more helpless, him or the vegetation. He considered this. Definitely there was a sadness about the Gerber daisies residing in a pot on the front step only a few feet from the actual earth."
an excerpt by the lovely Rhea Noel Hindemits short story found on her blog.

oh those pleats on that hat brim, well done.
